The traditional horse race 'Palio', which is run around the Piazza del Campo, is a perfect example of preserved medieval pageantry.
Horses are blessed in the churches of the boroughs participating in the race and also with their jockeys at the Cathedral.
The day of the race they all make their way in cortege in historical costume which parades from the streets into and around the Campo to the peal of the bell of the Mangia Tower till the actual Palio race takes place.
2nd July Palio di Provenzano
Historic parade starts at approximately 4.30pm.
Spectators in the stands and private windows take their places at approximately 4pm.
The race begins at approximately 7.30pm.
16th August Palio dell'Assunta

NOTES:
- Please reconfirm all above details on your arrival in Italy as the organisers regularly update the times / arrangements often up to very close the actual date of the event. Our indications are intended as guidelines completely outside our contract with you/the client/s should these change at any stage (our booking conditions paragraph 'LIABILITY' also refers).
- There are fixed times for anyone to take their place in the viewing points in the square and once seats in the stands / balconies have been taken and once inside private apartments, spectators are not allowed to enter / leave until the race has finished. Toilet facilities are usually available nearby.
- Food & drinks in glass or plastic containers may not be allowed into the square and especially in the stands / balconies / apartments.
- Should the race be cancelled either in bad weather or impractical conditions, normal procedure is postponement to the following day. Booked tickets are never refundable but, in such case, tickets remain valid if and when the race takes place.
